I recently updated from Windows XP pro (32-bit) SP2 to SP3, and then updated IE6 to IE8. I am not a computer wizard, but I know enough to avoid potential danger. I am unsure if this a WinXP, IE8 or audio problem; please point me to the correct forum. A) Based on other (non-Microsoft) forums notes, I did delete McAfee & Norton programs (that came pre-loaded on the laptop) using ADD/DELETE on the CONTROL PANEL.but did not use the McAfee or Norton 'sweep the computer' software because I was unaware of their existence at that time. B) I did close (I thought) all of the 'open' programs, but inadvertently may have left 1 or 2 running such as the lower toolbar Volume Control/Adjust audio properties icon and the touchpad icon. I say that either one may have been left running or closedjust not sure about those two programs. Since the upgrades, WinXP has had an issue.
SigmaTel audio device works for 10-90 minutes, then I get a popup telling me that a generic 'svchost' program must terminate and the problems are associated with mahp and xyz.txt.and the audio device has completely disappeared. No volume control, the device is missing from the device list.
I reboot.everything is back to normal.sound is OK for another 10-90 minutes and the same problem appears.and the sound is gone. (from the error popup window) Generic Host Process for Win32 Services.' No infections found. - ran Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D scan.no problems found - Firewall.
